| 520 | _aUntil recently we were still looking to define the Cypriot Aceramic Neolithic as a local variant akin to the ''PPNC'' or ''increasingly regional'' PN cultures of the Levant. fresh evidence from Cyprus, however, has increased the depth of the Cypriot Aceramic Neolithc some 2000 years, showing clear parallels that define the island part of the widespread PPNB ''inter-action sphere''. At the same time, development in the research of late Epi-Palaeolithic and Neolithic Cultures on the mainland has shown that the concept of increasing regionalization is no longer appropriate. Instead, the progress of Neolithic should be viewed as phenomena of shifting regional affinities that came about when various cultural elements spread by the process of diffusion. Such elelments can be traced in details of the chaines aperatoires and dfinal tool forms of the chipped stone industries documented on the island. In focusing on such elements, we may begin to see lines of continuity that suggest the sossibility of a longer antiquity for the develompnent of the Cypriot Aceramic. Although exhibiting its own unique identity, it was part of developments of the eastern Mediterranean mainland from the lata Epi-Palaeolithic. | ||
