| 520 | _aBuilt monumental tombs make their initial appearance in Cyprus at the site of Enkomi, in Late Cypriote II. There is, however, no continuation in the following period down to the end of Cypro-Geometric III and the beginning of Cypro-Archaic I, when there is a re-appearance and, in fact, a rapid development in monumental tomb architecture to the end of the Cypro-Archaic II. Analysis and research on the subject indicate that the impressive monumental tomb architecture of this period is a development of the Proto-Geometric (partly-built) tombs of Amathous that imitate the plan of the rock-cut chamber tombs of the Cypro-Mycenaean period of the 12th century B.C. The rapid development in this type of tomb architecture may be attributed to the intensive and continuous Aegean influence. reached Phrygia, Lydia, Caria and Lycia. The same tradition of architectural principles with its roots in Aegean-Mycenaean tomb architecture resulted in the emergence of the Cypro-Archaic tombs. | ||
