In addition to the finds brougth to light by excavations, nowadays the focus of archaeological research, organic remains such as sea-shells are also of significance. Both sea and land shells are good environmental indicators as the existence of each species depends on climatic and environmental factors, morphology of sea-bed etc. The presence of shells on an archaeological site reveals considerable information on the existing matural environment and the way of life of human communities. Furhter information that nay be extracted relates to types of decorationm, types of tools and types of vessels of everyday use, religious of ritually based exchanges etc. The material cultures of both the Aegean and Cyprus are generally well-known and so are their similarities and differences. The study of environmetal remains illuminates new and unknown aspects of human activity.
