As part of the Metals Exploration Seminar held at Billiton International Metals, The Hague, in January 1979, a field excursion was organised to Cyprus. The famous Ophiolite Complex and related ultrabasic rocks, lavas, chromium and copper ores were studied. Over thirty exposures were visited and the rock types encountered included pillowed and non-pillowed lavas, and basic and ultrabasic rocks such as gabbros, serpentinites, harzburgites, dunites and wehrlites. The study was centered around the two plutonic complexes at Troodos and Limassol Forest. These contain chromite and coppernickel-colbalt-iron sulfides. Several mining areas where pyritic copper deposits could be seen in association with their gossans were also visited.
