Summary, etc. This paper seeks to assess the relationship of Cyprus to the mainland in the early Neolithic, and the idea of insularity. This is achieved in part by an examination of the idea of island archaeology and by comparison with the nature of the early Neolithic on the mainland. The emphasis of the significance of the island context is considered to be more appropriate to the Pacific than the Mediterranean, while the early Neolithic of Cyprus is seen to reflect the diversity and adaptability of the mainland. Both observations suggest that cyprus at this point in time was very much an active part the wider PPNB cultural expansion.
