| Summary, etc. | Ancient tradition has maintained memories of connection between Cyprus and the Peloponnese going back to a distant past. The legends for the foundation of Cypriot cities by Peloponnesian war heroes, supported by archaeological finds date back to the Mycenaean era. These connections have recently been reaffirmed by the discovery of the shipwreck at Iria in the bay of the Argolis where Cypriot finds in its cargo dated to the Mycenaean period. In later historical times, the Cypriots refer to these origins with pride sometimes for reasons of political propaganda. Epigraphic evidence will be cited in thes paper confirming relations between Cyprus and Argolida-Epidauria in the Classical and Hellenistic periods, which even though published, complements related literary evidence. The types of inscription and their corresponding information varies but may be summarized as follows: -Funerary stele from Aegina referring to Glevkitas from Salamis (IG IV. 49, Archaic period). -Resolution taken by the Epidaurians about someone known as Solios (IG IV2 53. 4th century B.C.) -Base of honourary statue from Argos with an inscription referring to the King of Salamis, Nicocreon (IG IV, 483, 332-310 B.C.) -A list of thearodokoi from Nemea (SEG XXXVI, 331, ca 330-310 B.C.) -Inscription related to a monetary donation by Ptolemy VI and Ptolemy VIII, Cleopatra II and Cypriot cities, from Argos (BCH, 106 (1982) 263-280, SEG XXXII, 371, 170-164 B.C. Additional material to the above-mentioned inscriptions includes epigraphic evidence on the activities of the Argives in Cyprus. |
