| Summary, etc. | Idalion is often refereed to as one of the city-kingdoms that provided epigraphic and mumismatic evidence for relations with the Greek world. The frequency and nature of these relations are examined on the bgasis of finds of everyday use, artistic products and though other activities of the imhabitants of Idalion during its various periods. The location of ancient Idalion in the fertile valley of the Yialias river, its proximity to the copper-rich eastern foohills of the Troodos mountains as well as the possibility of easy access to the east and south coasts of the island have contributed towards the eastblishment of trading contacts with the major coastal centres - Enkomi and Kition and, later Salamis and Amathous, and, ultimately with the East Mediterranean and the Aegean. The establishment of the first settlement of the hill of Ambileri was probably the outcome of a joint venture which included the participation of Aegean settles, and was dated to the end of the 13th and the beginning of the 12th century B.C. on the basis of archaeological evidence. Although during this period, Aegean imports are scarce, the nature of the finds indicate that even at its imitial stages, the settlement of Idalion reached a sophisticated culturel level, comparabel to that of the major coastal centres and exhibited at the same time, an equally strong influence from the Aegean. Aegean inluence seems to continue until the end of the Geometric period when the first imports of some singificance from the Aegean islands and Attica begin to make their appearance. In the following Archaic and Classical periods imports of prestige items indicate the high level of economic and social standards achieved by the inhabitants of Idalion as well as their active participation in both trading and political activities of the period. |
